Japanese Hot Spring "Onsen" Etiquette
When visiting an onsen in Japan, there are a few customs to keep in mind to ensure a comfortable experience for everyone.
In most onsen, swimsuits are not allowed. Bathing is done without clothing, and men and women are usually separated. However, in the Manza Onsen area, you can also find some mixed-gender baths.
Please note that guests with tattoos may not be admitted to public baths. Policies vary by facility, so we recommend checking in advance. Some accommodations offer private baths, which may be a good option to consider.
-
Avoid drinking too much alcohol before entering the bath, and make sure to drink water to stay hydrated.
-
In the changing room, use a basket or locker to store your clothes and belongings.
-
Please refrain from using your phone in the changing room or bathing area.
-
Before entering the bath, wash your body thoroughly and rinse off all soap.
-
Do not put towels into the bath.
-
Before returning to the changing room, dry yourself lightly with your towel to keep the floor dry.
Major Onsen in Tsumagoi

Manza Onsen
Manza Onsen is located at an altitude of 1,800 meters, making it one of the highest hot spring areas in Japan. Its waters are sulfur-rich, known for their milky white color and unique properties.
The area features a variety of hot spring sources, with an abundant flow of approximately 5.4 million liters per day.
We highly recommend staying overnight to fully enjoy the experience, especially soaking in an outdoor bath while gazing at a sky full of stars.

Kazawa Onsen
Kazawa Onsen features hydrogen carbonate-rich waters, known for their gentle, skin-beautifying properties.
According to local legend, a wounded deer once came to these hot springs to heal itself, giving Kazawa Onsen a long-standing reputation as a place for rest and recovery.
It is especially popular among visitors seeking relaxation and the restorative benefits of hot spring bathing.
